So says Variety.
First, there were rumors. And we tossed the idea around several times during the past few months. It still hasn't really sunk in... the man behind one of the greatest science fiction films of all time is back and signed-on to direct — not produce, direct — another Alien film, this time a prequel. It's almost eerie.
Now granted we can all sit around and argue the case for or against an Alien prequel concept but let's not forget one upside: Ridley Scott is in charge, meaning this will not be Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, or another AVP caliber hack-job. At the very least we'll get some amazingly epic visual stimulation in a science fiction universe. How can that be bad?
I will be honest here and say I have my doubts about Scott topping himself with a new chapter in the Alien saga. The first film, which the man directed at age 40, was and still is an epic masterpiece. And if we're all going to be honest then we would have to agree: few sci-fi films can even sit on the same shelf as Alien much less reside in the same room (no, not even Cameron's Aliens, sorry.) Scott repeating such magic would be akin to AC/DC recording another Back In Black. It's just not gonna happen.
But — it still might be pretty good!
So what do you think? Can the 71 year-old filmmaker pull it off? Will Giger be involved? Will we pay witness to some Space Jockey greatness? God almighty, so many questions. I can't wait to hear more on this as the production gets underway...
