John K Pitches A Cartoon Show At 2009 San Diego Comic Con
In the spirit of full disclosure, let me just say I am a big fan of John K's work. John has such a unique style and vision and such a vast knowledge of cartooning, it just blows my mind. Most of all, his cartoons always make me happy. -Mr. FunThis is pretty neat. John Kricfalusi, creator of Ren & Stimpy, pitched a George Liquor cartoon to a group of Comic Con attendees this year. I assume he has since then pitched it to actual TV execs.
Love his blog by the way. As a cartoonist myself, I visit nearly every single day. Here's a good post proving why John is The Ghandi Of Cartoons.
Disregard the fact that John has only had one huge-scale cartoon hit in Ren & Stimpy (not to mention the fact that he got very screwed over by Nickelodeon) and disregard the fact that yes, some of his ideas are strange (maybe stranger than even I would accept, and I am one strange guy)... the man is very much a cartoon genius.

A couple of observations:

2) I never knew John did such a great job as the voice of George Liquor (originally voiced by Mike Pataki)
3) I'm not sure what the odds are of this cartoon actually being picked up... it seems a bit disjointed and a little hardcore
What do you make of this? He did a nice job getting his pitch across I think. I really love John's overall approach to cartooning (how The Masters used to do it) and his sense of style/technique. I like his approach to directing too. And I love his spirit and quirkiness. But I just don't know about a cartoon called "George Liquor." Nickelodeon actually edited-out the "Liquor" portion of his name when the character appeared in Ren & Stimpy back in the day. I'm not sure much has changed since the 90's. If anything, isn't the world even more politically correct now? Sadly, I think it may be. On one hand I can see a network like Spike picking up a short called George Liquor. On the other hand I'm not so sure the old-school, kiddie vibe meshes with the hard edge of George. It's almost as if the cartoon is trying to appeal to two totally different demographics: adults and little kids. I suppose that may not be terrible in and of itself — it's the recipe for most successful cartoons, actually — it's just strange to see a character like George Liquor (with his cigarettes and boozing) hanging out with little children. Ren & Stimpy were animals. These are kids. I know it's a frickin' cartoon, it's just an odd combination to me and I'm not seeing people accepting of it.
Then again, maybe he's going after the Family Guy crowd.
So. If you were a TV exec looking for new cartoon programming, would you consider this? I welcome your comments...

SDCC Report: Tron Legacy P.R. Goes All-Out
I am still awe-struck by this. Last night in San Diego, Disney pretty much pwn'ed James Cameron and his little Avatar with an amazingly geekified spectacle promoting Tron Legacy. You must — I repeat — you must watch these three clips:
I worked in the video game industry for nearly five years and paid witness to dozens and dozens of awesome P.R. events, some of them just extraordinary in scope (at one point I should probably blog about some of them), but I have to say from a hype-building standpoint I'm not sure I've ever seen anything more awesome than the above. And I'm not even a big Tron fan. Yeah I owned Tron Deadly Discs on Intellivision (fun game actually) and I played my fair share of the coin-ops but that's about it.

Disney recreated Flynn's Arcade complete with all of the games and even an air hockey table. They even programmed and assembled full-sized, fully-working Space Paranoids arcade machines for this... like the one seen in the original film! On top of that, Disney built a full-size lightcycle for god's sake! And they did it all to promote the sequel to a movie that — quite honestly, didn't perform all that well back in the day. If there were any questions, Disney is clearly serious about this franchise.
And yeah, before you say it, I agree that hype does not necessarily equal greatness (in most cases it does not), but you would have to concede Disney is really playing to the geek community here. And I think that's cool.
Cameron must be secretly dying inside right about now. I know I would be.

SDCC Report: Avatar Footage Shown! Detailed Description!
So here we go. After months, maybe years of speculation, hype, rumors, and everything else, people have gotten their first look at James Cameron's up-and-coming 3D film, Avatar. The good news is, the footage reportedly looked great. The bad news is your eyeballs may not get raped out of their sockets after all.Quint from Ain't It Cool News provided a very detailed run-down of the footage shown, a full 25 minutes worth. Here's a quote:
"Honestly, I’ve never had a picture of this movie in my head. The plot has been vague, the details minimal…
so I’ve only ever hoped to see a fun, kick-ass James Cameron movie. On that level, I’m positive the eye-candy will be there for me come December. But I will say lower those expectations. The footage was good, layered, incredibly detailed and full of imagination and incredible imagery, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s the next quantum leap forward in filmmaking. However there's no doubt Cameron's pushing the limits. Just don't expect to have your head blown out your asshole or eyeballs raped or whatever the newest talkback thing is."

SDCC Report: Shaky-Blur-Cam Footage Of Tron Legacy Is STILL Awesome To Watch
Even though it looks like someone spooged on the lens (and they very well may have), this Tron Legacy footage from San Diego Comic Con is still freaking awesome to watch!
And watch it now because it's probably going to get yanked real soon...
SDCC Report: Get Ready To Watch 15 Minutes Of Avatar In 3D... For FREE
Get ready to mark your friggin' calenders. According to Ain't It Cool News, Cameron just announced a deal with IMAX theaters (digital and film IMAX's). On August 21st, IMAX theaters across the country will be showing 15 minutes of 3D footage from Avatar... for FREE!One thing I've been wondering though, and maybe you know the answer to this. Is the title of this film a poor choice and/or confusing? There was already an animated series called Avatar The Last Air Bender. I typed "Avatar" into Google and nearly all the images I got (at least 90%) were from the stupid cartoon show! I don't get it. You'd think Cameron would have somehow secured a more unique title or maybe alter the spelling or something. What do you think?

One of the big unveilings today at the San Diego Comic Con was Tron Legacy, the sequel to Disney's 1981 film Tron. After being shown several minutes of footage complete with effects, many reports are coming in indicating thumbs-up. It's not 1981 anymore, so some real kick-ass visual stuff going on with this movie.
