Custom Famous Covers Thing

There's a guy in the UK named Nick who, back in the day, took Toy Biz Famous Covers action figures and customized the shit out of them. And man, he customized a lot of them. Even more impressive was the fact that the guy did such great work. Check out his custom Thing, above. Here's a link to his website which is still running.

I did custom figures like these back in 1999-2000 with the help of my wife. I designed the characters, sourced the materials and sculpted the heads, and she sewed the costumes. She did an amazing job on the sewing, just amazing. The figures weren't too shabby, actually. We sold them for an average of $100 each. Characters I remember doing included Black Panther, Luke Cage, Blizzard, Firebrand, Doctor Octopus, Tarantula, The Shocker, The Jackal, Morbius, Punisher, Carrion and Molten Man. One day I got an email from a doctor who wanted us to make him a custom Nova... and he was willing to pay something like $225 for it! I spent hours and hours fine-tuning this thing to perfection and sent it off for his approval. When he received it he was absolutely thrilled.

In any case, at one point I'll try to dig up some pics of the FCs we did, and post them here on the blog.

DC Retro-Action: Characters I'd Like to See

Once Mattel cranks out the familiars in Mego format, I would really like to see them produce some of the more obscure characters from the 70's. Yeah bitches, I'm talking OMAC. Here are the characters I would shell out cash for in a heartbeat:

Took this pic at TRU on Sunday. I had no idea Mego style figures from the 70's were being relaunched. Yeah. I pretty much shit my pants right there in aisle 4. Although a TRU exclusive at brick-n-mortar, the entire line of DC Retro-Action figures can be purchased online through Amazon.

Microman Retro TV Commercials Are A Trip

Microman — better known here in the States as Micronauts — was an awesome toy line back in the day. I posted about Micronauts and the potential for a Micronauts movie a couple of weeks ago so click that one if you'd like. Yes indeed, it has been a dream of mine for quite some time, if you want to read more.

So I just tripped on some Japanese TV commercials and I thought you might get a kick out of them too.

Holy Christ! A Micronauts Movie May Actually Be In The Works

Well, looks like I'm getting getting closer to my dream... I posted about this earlier in the year... and now supposedly there are talks going on regarding a possible Micronauts movie — with JJ Abrams involved, no less. I knew it was only a matter of time before the suits in "Hollywood: Land of Unoriginality" dipped their grubby paws into this toy well.

As a kid, Micronauts were my favorite line of toys, second only to Mego's World's Greatest Superheroes (nothing could ever, ever be better than those cloth-costumed dolls action figures.) One reason I loved Micronauts so much was because most of the figures and accessories had holes and pegs in them, and you could get really creative by adding or subtracting pieces and parts to make unique weapons, vehicles and characters. Plus, they had orange, rubber-tipped missiles that actually fired from missile launcher thingies! Well, until some asshole parenting group laid the law down and forced toy companies to stop making toys with dangerous, rubber-tipped missiles. You could really poke an eye out with those things.

Smash-Up Derby

I never had this as a kid but my friend did. Other than the fact that we progressively lost more and more pieces as we played with it — and it took a little while to reassemble between crashes — this toy was as awesome as it looks! They should re-launch this toy for kids of today. Maybe a Pimpin' Ain't Easy set with two Cadillacs.

Star Trek Burger King Toys Are Crappy

The Indiana Jones toys that Burger King came out with a couple of years ago were really, really cool. These Trek toys are not. In fact, they are pretty gay. I was going to take my kids to Burger King after the movie this weekend but now I am not.

Marvin Glass: The Greatest, Most Awesomest Toy Maker Of All Time

Okay, you young 'uns may not know this, but before the invention of He-Man and Star Wars and Transformers and all of that stuff, there lived the most successful toy inventor to ever walk the earth. His name was Marvin Glass.

Marvin Glass invented more hit toys than anyone else before him or since, and his track record proves it. Ever heard of Mouse Trap? Lite Bright? Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots? Those "klackety-klack" wind-up teeth? Glass invented those toys and hundreds, if not thousands more.



Marvin Glass became a wealthy man. And he knew the meaning of the word "fun." Not only did he create fun toys for little kids (and some adults too), but his actual life was all about having fun! The man was on such a roll churning out hit toys and cashing checks that at one point he had his own mansion with servants and even groupies! Toy inventor groupies! Debauchery was rampant. Think back to when Steve Martin invented the "Opti-Grab" in the movie The Jerk; when he became a millionaire and threw wild disco parties and spent money like a drunken sailor! As legend has it, that was the life of Marvin Glass. He was a man with a spellbinding story, and for me, a personal creative inspiration.
